Turkey allows schools to teach Kurdish

Turkey allows schools to teach Kurdish

Turkey’s government is letting some schools teach Kurdish. Only two decades ago speaking Kurdish in public was a crime, but now the government is easing its restriction on the language of the Kurds. The Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has stated that this is a historic step for Turkey’s largest minority group. The Kurds form about 20% of the country’s population, mainly in the southeastern part of the country. But many have gone to Istanbul and other cities in search of jobs and a better life.

Kurds have been fighting for more rights and a certain amount of autonomy in Turkey. In the last decades thousands of people have been killed in fighting between the Turkish government and the Kurdish rebel group PKK.

For a long time Turkey has banned Kurdish because government officials are afraid that it would separate the country and make the PKK too strong. In the latest statement Erdogan said that if a school has enough students who want to take Kurdish as an elective subject a school is allowed to offer lessons. The Turkish government has found out that it cannot solve the Kurdish problem through violence alone. Kurdish language and culture is spreading increasingly in Turkey, Iraq and Syria.

For Kurdish activists the action does not go far enough. They demand the right to educate students in Kurdish in all subjects. The European Union has repeatedly put pressure on Turkey to pass better laws for Kurdish citizens. It says that if Turkey wants to become a full member of the EU minority rights must be granted.

An Engaging Review Game for Formative Assessment – Quizizz

Quizizz is an engaging review game that students love. It has a lot of similarities to the incredibly popular Kahoot, but also offers many unique features.  Like Kahoot, students are awarded points based on how quickly they answer each question. Unlike Kahoot, each student answers questions at their own pace. Students are provided with immediate feedback, and can even review their results while they wait for other students to finish.
Teachers can search from a large number of publicly available Quizizz, or they can make their own with the easy to use quiz editor. It’s easy for students to join. A unique code is generated for each game. Students simply go to join.quizizz.com and enter the code.

The importance of games in education

Unquestionably, the field of language teaching has known a drastic change moving from the classic educational model, wherein teaching is deemed a serious matter, to the most flexible and communicative approaches upon which contemporary methods are based. Thus, a funny low anxiety atmosphere in the classroom has become a prerequisite to effective learning. The use of games, which is the scope of this paperis only one way among others to foster that atmosphere.

Why use games?
There is a common perception that all learning should be serious and solemn in nature and that if one is having fun and there is hilarity and laughter, then it is not really learning. This is a misconception. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same time. One of the best ways of doing this is through games. Many experienced textbook and methodology manuals writers have argued that games are not just time-filling activities but have a great educational value. W. R. Lee holds that most language games make learners use the language instead of thinking about learning the correct forms (1979:2). He also says that games should be treated as central not peripheral to the foreign language teaching programme.Howevern he warns against overlooking games’ pedagogical value, particularly in foreign language teaching.

RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER TORRENT-CONSPIR4CY

Hello!  Just a quick note while I am at the Games For Change Festival.  Thank you all for coming to my talk. It was great to share some of the key insights from my research last year.
Hi!  It's that time of the year again for the SXSW 2017 Panel Picker.  Please vote for our panel on game-based computer science education.  We'll explain why game-based learning is good for computer science education and spotlight learning games used in classrooms now.
Session Description:

It’s 2017! Your students need to learn computer science. How do you teach them in a way that gets them excited about coding? How do you reach geeks and non-geeks, girls and boys, computer experts and total novices? How do you do this without a CS degree, comprehensive curriculum resources and standards, and a magic wand of learnination?

A diverse panel of learning experts will dive into how game-based learning can create growth mindsets and overwhelming coding obsessions in every student. We’ll discuss what to look for in learning games, common pitfalls in teaching CS and bringing games into the classroom, and how to be the content expert without having studied CS before.
